Is a springfield xd-9 subcompact good for self defense?

This would be my first gun (i shoot alot but dont own), im looking for a safe gun and this one has a triger safety, a grip safty, a slide indicator, a round indicator, and the new once have a manual safety. but what i really want to know is if i was sleeping and someone was kicking in my door can i shoot the gun just waking up or would the recoil hurt me. i shoot a full size 9mm every month and im a 155lb male.
